Posted on 08 June 2008 by admin

It’s the best friend of many amateur golfers. It has added strokes to scorecards and subtracted distance from drives for as long as golf has been around. It is also the cause of millions of lost golf balls. What is this villain? It’s the slice and if you are looking to cure it, then you have come to the right place. Of the many mistakes that amateurs make on the golf course, this is the one that they have the most trouble fixing. In this article, we will deal with some of the prevailing techniques that will help you loose that slice.

  • Fix That Grip
It’s a simple tip that might just help you fix your slice before it ever manifests itself. Many players who slice the ball have a grip that is too strong. In layman’s terms, this means that the top hand is too far on top of the club. This causes you to not be able to come through the ball and encourages you to come over the ball, instead. In addition, this type of grip lends itself to opening up the club face at impact. When you open up your club face at impact, you are going to slice the ball more times than not. You can fix your grip simply and quickly. All you need to do is move that top hand around a little, so that it is more on the side of the club, rather than sitting on the top of the club. If this doesn’t help you, then you are going to be in for some serious swing modifications.
  • Don’t “Come Over” the Ball
This is the most common cause of the slice and it’s the reason why most people just can’t seem to get rid of it. If you are “coming over” the golf ball, your swing plane is pretty much in shambles. This means that when you get to the top of your golf swing, you are hacking down and across the ball instead of coming under and through the ball. This over the top move is common because it is easily the most comfortable and natural way to swing a golf club. It’s no the most effective way to swing, though. You need to practice coming through the golf ball.

How do you do that? Check out the attached Youtube video for one drill that will instantly help you develop a new swing plane. In this video, the teaching pro is changing the entire approach to hitting a golf ball. He gives you a drill that will pretty much require you to swing out at the golf ball instead of swinging over the top of the ball. Notice on the video that there is an object directly to the right of the golf ball. This is an important visual trick that helps to make the drill much more effective. Because this object is on the outside of the ball, your hand-eye coordination will naturally want to hit to the inside of the ball. When you practice coming through the ball on the inside, you will lose the slice.

This drill is effective not only because of visual tricks, but also because of the way that it requires you to move your body. Because your feet are positioned so far at an angle from the golf ball, you have no choice but to swing through the ball if you are going to hit it. If you try to take an over the top angle to the golf ball during this drill, you won’t even be able to make contact. In addition, it gets you to thinking that you are swinging out to the right of the ball. In reality, if you watch closely, the golf club is coming on a completely natural and straight line to the ball. Only the necessary visual trick makes it seem as if the club is swinging out to the right.

Curing a slice doesn’t have to be difficult, especially with this type of teaching tool readily available to you. It’s all about swing plane. You might not be able to completely modify your swing in five minutes, but you can be on the way to a better swing if you utilize these tips.
