GOLF HAS BEEN RUINED BY THE DISTANCES OF THE HOLES 600 YARD PAR 5’s.. GUYS JUST GET UP THERE AND BLAST IT AS FAR AS THEY CAN NOW AND DONT CARE IF ITS ON THE FAIRWAY OR NOT
That hole, even with a 5- or 6-iron, is terrifying 1) if the pin’s in a tough spot, and 2) if the green is as firm as it ought to be. Oh, and also–if you have to hit the sweet spot on a blade. It’s a different thing if you’re a pro who gets to have his clubs correct things for him.
Well, I mean…conditions are SO soft at Augusta, and the greens have zero fire or firmness in them right now. Still, AK had to make some putts, so give him that–but there’s no doubt you don’t have to hit the same quality of shots now.
Your points are good ones. Here’s another: Tiger Woods wins the ‘08 U.S. Open by hitting barely 50% of the fairways.
I turned it off, I’ll probably only watch it to see a few highlights from Gary Players career..
Nick Watney averaged 11 greens a round an finished 2nd at Doral.. pulled a wedge 40 left of the hole.. and we pay these guys millions? to do what? chip and putt?
At Doral Padraig had 21 putts the second round? and shot what? 57? NO ..71!!!
he has a crap golf swing, and it’s this garbage that get rewarded..
That used to be the beginning of amen corner, guys used to have to hit a 3 iron or 4 wood into that hole, to a very difficult green, and the shot had to land in the front right part of the green.
You said it. Nicklaus was exactly right in saying that the new equipment doesn’t make the best pros any better, it just allows a bunch of other guys to make a living and even contend for titles who shouldn’t be–and who wouldn’t, with persimmon and forged blades.
That’s not even to mention the difference in course conditions between then and now.
Hate to break it to you all, but these classic swings from the 50’s are better golf swings than that guys have now on tour. Why? Go try to hit that stuff from that era and you’ll find out how good these guys were. The didn’t use crutches like the guys do now.
“Doc” won two US Opens and The Masters. Some say he was the toughest when he was in the lead.Stooped posture and strong grip were made up for by hands the size of catcher’s mitts.A true gentleman.

Yeah, a 9-iron–and still people put the ball in the wrong places, miss the green left, etc.

MASTERS 09
I watched Kenny Perry hit a nine iron into #10..
That used to be the beginning of amen corner, guys used to have to hit a 3 iron or 4 wood into that hole, to a very difficult green, and the shot had to land in the front right part of the green.
Now a 9 iron? What a joke..
