The golf swing is a complicated thing. Even golfers who have been playing for their whole lives often struggle to get it exactly right. With enough work and the right techniques, you can improve your golf swing and take scores off of your game. Here are the five easiest ways to turn your ugly golf swing into a perfect golf swing.

Slow Down
One of the biggest problems for many golfers is that they want to rush their way through the golf swing. They think that the harder and quicker they swing the club, the farther the ball will go. It takes years for many golfers to realize that a fast tempo doesn’t always equal a lot of power. If you really want to be more comfortable on the course, then you need to start being more comfortable through your swing. Practice taking the club back slower through your backswing. When you reach the top, don’t feel like you have to rush your way back to the ball. Your swing tempo should be completely relaxed. Think about the swing of Ernie Els and try to emulate it. In the attached Youtube video, you will see that this big guy has a very relaxed backswing, yet he is able to produce a ton of power.

Get a Routine
If you’ve been privileged enough to attend a professional golf event, then you have probably seen the best golfers in the world during their pre-shot routine. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that these guys do pretty much the exact same thing leading up to each and every shot. This isn’t by accident. These guys are the best in the world, so if they are all doing something, you might want to get in line and join them. Your routine can be something simple or something elaborate. Do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable standing over the ball. It’s essential that you develop some routine to keep you focused on the shot, though.

Improve your Shoulder Turn
Nothing produces better clubhead speed than a good shoulder turn. Your power comes from this rotation of the shoulders and it will also help you keep the ball straight. Many golfers like to let their hands and their arms do all of the work. If you want to hit it like the pros hit it, then you need to let your shoulders do the work. Next time you are out on the range, concentrate on hitting the ball smoother with a better shoulder turn. The more rotation you can get without going off balance will help you hit the ball more solidly.

Swing Inside the Ball
A common mistake of amateur golfers is that they like to swing over the ball. The come across the top on their downswing, meaning that they immediately hit the ball with a wicked slice. If you want to hit the ball straight or even with a nice little draw, then you have to swing with an inside plane in mind. This can only happen if you are correct in your first move down towards the ball. Instead of immediately swinging down on the golf ball, practice swinging out towards the ball. You might think of it as if you are trying to hit the inside of the golf ball instead of the outside of it. Though it might feel uncomfortable for a little while, this will produce straighter, truer golf shots.

Head Down, Feet Square
“Keep your head down” is one of the first golf teaching phrases that any golfer will hear. Still, many of us don’t remember those words well enough. You absolutely must remember to keep your head down when you hit the golf ball. This way, you will stay on the shot through the ball and you won’t risk hitting the top of the ball. This will also help you with your tempo, keeping you from swinging too hard.

Keeping your feet square is similar important. Without balance, you have no chance of hitting a good golf shot. You need to be on balance in order to produce power and to keep the club head in a position where it will produce a straigh
